The Laboratory of Functional and Evolutionary Morphology has a long tradition in the study of animal musculo-skeletal systems by combining comparative and experimental methods of analysis, studies in the laboratory and in the field to describe and understand at best the relationships between the animal performance, its behavior and its environment.
Two main axes are currently developed in the laboratory :
- The starting point of our unit research concerns the ecomorphology. We are particularly interested in the ways and mechanisms animals use to live in their environment and how the species interact. We aim to understand the (functional) morphology and evolution of organisms in order to understand how organisms can adapt to their (changing) environment. The study of the morphology allows also the development of skills dealing with geometric morphometrics and the modeling of evolutionary traits.
- The second axis deals with the biology of sound production and hearing in teleost fishes. The complexity of biodiversity is so high that its understanding requires a multidisciplinary approach and a variety of techniques in the fields of biology, mathematics and physics. Laboratory members have skills in Morphology, Ethology, (optic and electronic) Histology, Physiology, Ontogeny, Phylogeny, systematics (with e.g. the description of two new species), µCT scanning, 3D-reconstructions.
